Property worth Rs 15 lakh was destroyed after two units of Mapusa Bazaar, a shopping centre in Mapusa went up in flames in the wee hours of Saturday.
Two fire tenders from Mapusa fire station rushed to the spot after the office received a call at around 2.50 am in the morning.
Sources informed that some people in the market noticed smoke emanating from the shutters and promptly informed the fire station.
The fire spread destroying several goods & furniture, including part of the roof. Grocery items, two air conditioners, seven computers, racks, counters and other consumable items were destroyed in the fire.
Mapusa fire station in-charge Bosco Ferrao and eight other firemen were involved in controlling the flames. The officials pegged the loss at Rs 15 lakh and saved property worth Rs 50 lakh.
Mapusa Bazaar is run by The Mapusa Consumer Cooperative Society Ltd and is situated in the heart of the Mapusa municipal market.
Although cause of fire was yet to be ascertained, sources said short circuit could be the most probable cause. Further investigation is on.
